A Castle of Religious Power and Hidden Hauntings
Unlike Llansteffan Castle, which was built for military defense (as explored in my blog about Llansteffan Castle’s ghostly legends), Llawhaden Castle tells a different story—one filled with ghostly legends, shadowy figures, and unexplained events. These Llawhaden Castle ghost stories have made it a key part of Wales’ haunted heritage. This medieval fortress, nestled in the Pembrokeshire countryside, was not a traditional stronghold of knights and warriors. Instead, it was built by the bishops of St. Davids, serving as both a place of religious authority and luxurious residence.
Yet, despite its holy origins, ghostly legends and eerie whispers linger among its ruins, hinting at a darker history hidden behind its sacred past.

The Shadow in the Archways
One of the most well-known ghostly encounters at Llawhaden Castle is that of a dark, hooded figure seen moving through the ruins. Some believe this to be the spirit of a medieval bishop, forever tied to the castle. Others claim he was a betrayed monk, still searching for justice.
Visitors have reported seeing a shadowy presence near the great hall’s archways—only for it to vanish before their eyes. Paranormal investigators have even recorded strange cold spots and sudden temperature drops in these areas.
Is this a remnant of the castle’s religious past, or just the imagination playing tricks in the crumbling stone corridors?
The Drowned Knight of Llawhaden
A lesser-known but chilling tale tells of a knight who met his end in the waters below the castle. Some say he was thrown from the battlements during a bitter feud, while others believe he drowned in a failed escape attempt.
On certain misty evenings, locals have reported hearing the sound of splashing water, followed by faint cries for help—though no one is ever seen.
Could this be the tormented soul of the drowned knight, forever reliving his final moments?

The Curse of the Hidden Chamber
Rumors persist of a hidden underground chamber within Llawhaden Castle—a place where valuable relics or secrets were once kept. Some legends suggest that those who seek to uncover it will be cursed, as if the spirits of the past are determined to protect whatever lies buried beneath the ruins.
While no one has officially found this chamber, stories of uneasy sensations, disembodied whispers, and sudden nausea near certain sections of the castle continue to fuel speculation.
Could this be the work of overactive imaginations, or does Llawhaden truly guard a secret best left undisturbed?

Historical Figure: Bishop Henry de Gower
One of the most influential figures tied to Llawhaden Castle was Bishop Henry de Gower, a 14th-century clergyman known for his grand architectural projects. He was responsible for expanding the castle into a luxurious bishop’s palace, transforming it from a military stronghold into a symbol of wealth and power.
Meanwhile, despite his efforts to strengthen the influence of St. Davids, his legacy remains shrouded in mystery—with some believing his spirit still watches over the ruins he helped build.
In my next historical blog, I will explore the life and influence of Bishop Henry de Gower, a man who left his mark on Wales but may have never truly left his castle.
Where to Next?
Unlike Llansteffan’s windswept battlements, Llawhaden Castle carries a different kind of presence—one shaped by religion, ambition, and hidden mysteries.
But the journey isn’t over. Next, I travel to Pembroke Castle, one of Wales’ most famous medieval fortresses. With a history rich in royal connections, fierce battles, and ghostly encounters. Will its spirits be as restless as those of Llawhaden? I’m about to find out.
Disclaimer
While Llawhaden Castle has a rich history of ghost stories, all paranormal claims should be viewed with a critical mind. Many sightings can be explained by psychology, environmental factors, and historical context. This blog explores these stories from both a historical and skeptical perspective.
